Survey: In-house consultancies report strong growth in restructuring projects
MSL Germany / Key word(s): Restructure of Company Survey: In-house consultancies report strong growth in restructuring projects +++ A successful year for internal consulting +++ Further development of fields of expertise +++ Frankfurt, December 17, 2012 – The internal consulting units of leading companies in Germany are noticing a marked increase in the demand for consulting services with restructuring projects. This emerged from a survey among members of the Inhouse Consulting Network, an association of 30 in-house consulting units from leading German companies. Accordingly, in the past year, restructuring and cost-reduction projects made up 16 percent of all in-house consulting projects. This is twice the amount of the previous year. The long-term prospects of the in-house consulting industry make cost cutting and restructuring, especially in Europe, a significant long-term issue. 'For many companies it is extremely important that their operational excellence programmes and reorganisations follow a holistic approach that also respects corporate values,' said Alexander Meyer auf der Heyde, head of Bayer Business Consulting. 'Internal consultants not only have a high level of expertise, but are closer to the topic and therefore able to develop sustainable solutions that are more closely aligned to the needs of the company and its employees.' For a total of 74 percent of the companies surveyed, the main reason for awarding restructuring projects to internal consulting units, apart from the high level of professional expertise, was to reposition the company closer to its core business, to decision makers and to the corporate culture. Almost half of these believe this share in the consulting sector is growing because in-house consulting teams are becoming increasingly skilled and therefore increasingly proficient. In addition, trust between consultant and company plays an important role for a great number of network members. 32 percent believe that restructuring projects are increasingly awarded to internal consultants rather than external consultants, because the former enjoy a trust advantage over the latter. This trend will continue in the coming year. 65 percent of the companies surveyed will continue to develop their consulting work in the restructuring field. In addition a further quarter of the internal consulting units are scheduled to become active in this field for the first time. For the most part, in-house consultants can look back on a successful year. According to the survey, internal consulting turnover rose by 17.7 percent in 2011. For 2012, the in-house consulting units surveyed anticipate a turnover growth on the same level.
