Interpol presidency: German authorities cautious about Arab Emirates’ bid – Allegations of serious human rights violations by Major General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi Lyon/Berlin/London, April 19th, 2021 – The candidacy of Emirati Major General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi for the post of Interpol president has met with fierce criticism in the UK and reticence from German police authorities. A report by a human rights organization accuses the Emirati of being responsible, among other things, for the detention and torture of a Briton. The United Arab Emirates is also said to misuse international wanted “Red Notice” calls from Interpol to arrest fugitive political opponents. The former director of the British public prosecutor’s offices believes that the Emirates wants to secure themselves the presidency through a multi-million donation to Interpol. With the German police authorities, the application of Major General Raisi is received rather reservedly. The German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) spokesperson explained to the communication agency Meister Mandeltree that the BKA would test the bid of major general Rais. An evaluation of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be included in the decision-making process. The German delegation would have to take the recommendation into account in its vote during the 89th Interpol General Assembly. Contact: Meister Mandeltree Kommunikation GmbH
