AGO AG Energie + Anlagen successfully commissions energy plant for Africa’s greenest hotel
(DGAP-Media / 06.09.2013 / 09:58) Press release, 6 September 2013 AGO AG Energie + Anlagen successfully commissions energy plant for Africa's greenest hotel - Highly efficient heat pump system constructed for heating, domestic water and air conditioning - Connected to a geothermal field extending over 11 km Kulmbach, 6 September 2013: AGO AG Energie + Anlagen (WKN: A1TNL4, ISIN: DE000A1TNL44) has successfully commissioned the energy plant for 'Africa's greenest hotel located at South Africa's Cape Town International Airport. In mid-2012, AGO AG Energie + Anlagen was awarded the contract for planning, development and construction of a high-efficiency regenerative energy plant for South Africa's Hotel Verde. The company's engineers set to work developing and building a highly efficient heat pump system for heating domestic water and air conditioning. With energy efficiency and power from renewable sources a main area of focus for the new 145-room hotel, AGO installed a system that is capable of simultaneously cooling and heating while consuming very little electricity. The company connected the heat pumps to a huge geothermal system having 11 km of piping and 100 boreholes. In winter, the earth serves as a heat source for the heat pumps. In summer, excess heat is channelled into the earth. Since the amount of heat channelled into the earth is just about the same as the amount taken from it over the course of the year, the earth's temperature remains in balance in the long term. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit trade organisation, awarded Hotel Verde its second highest honour - LEED Gold - upon completion. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) system takes a look at a number of factors, including sustainable construction and efficient water consumption. The most detailed part of the criteria examines the installation, inspection and monitoring of heating and cooling systems, lighting and facilities as well as the use of renewable energy. Factors also include the materials and resources employed in construction, indoor air quality and the building's technology. 'The plant will achieve optimal efficiency as occupancy levels at Hotel Verde start increasing in the coming weeks. But even now, we are already proud to be a part of the greenest hotel in Africa. We see this energy-efficient project, alongside the already existing energy plants for the Heineken brewery near Johannesburg, as an additional reference for further innovative energy supply solutions in South Africa,' said Günther Hein, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of AGO AG Energie + Anlagen.
