In addition to office and commercial premises, there is a daycare facility for children in the quarter as well as 387 apartments. As Thomas Felgenhauer, a managing director of HOWOGE, explains, “In planning this quarter, we paid attention to the issue of sustainability from the very start. The criteria of the DGNB provided us with important guidance here and were directly included in the planning and construction process. The platinum certificate is the result of considerable teamwork. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the project – in particular, our general contractor PORR, the firm of architects Baumschlager Eberle, the general planning company pde Integrale Planung and, of course, our HOWOGE team.” Platinum certificate To make the idea of sustainable building applicable in practice, measurable and therefore capable of comparison, the DGNB has developed a certification system which is based on ecology, economic efficiency and social responsibility – the key aspects of sustainability. René Krüger, Chief Construction Manager at PORR GmbH & Co. KGaA: “The DGNB platinum certificate reflects the need of our client HOWOGE to design the Berlin of tomorrow sustainably. The certificate is proof that, in buildings, the requirements of sustainability are not only part of the planning process but are actually put into practice.” Within the Quartier am Rathauspark, the high-rise office building at 1, Stefan-Heym-Platz, including the base building along Möllendorffstraße and Frankfurter Allee, was assessed for the certificate. These buildings are of high ecological quality with regard to their environmental footprint across their entire life cycle. This life cycle assessment takes into consideration, for example, the production, operation, disposal and recycling of the entire building as well as its energy strategy. At the same time, importance was attached to building materials of the highest quality. This means that the composition of every product used was scrutinised. So, regional products and responsibly procured materials like wood or natural stone were used. Of key significance to the aspect of social responsibility was barrier-free access and, therefore, social diversity in the use of the premises. Furthermore, the building has a very flexible designed floorplan and can be adapted to meet changes of use. Finally, the economic efficiency of the building meets the highest standards in terms of the entire economic life cycle. Moreover, the planning and construction processes were realised both efficiently and comprehensively in accordance with sustainability requirements.
