in Marketing ausgegeben (Marketing-Umsatz-Relation: 36 Prozent).
Im ersten Halbjahr 2000 betrug die Marketing-Umsatz – Relation
noch 64 Prozent. Auch die Personalkosten sind im Vergleich zum
Umsatz gesunken.

buecher.de/mediantis: Sales increase more than threefold during
the first nine months 2000
Munich, 24 November 2000 – The rapid growth of
mediantis/buecher.de AG, ranked second in the market for online
book and music sales, continues. In the first nine months of the
current financial year sales increased to 25.5 million
Deutschmarks, more than triple the figure achieved in the same
period last year. As at 30 September 2000 a result of -11.8
million Deutschmarks is reported, comprising -19.8 million
Deutschmarks from business operations and a positive financial
result of 8.0 million Deutschmarks.
Over the first nine months mediantis/buecher.de has managed to
reduce principle cost factors relative to sales. During the
reported period sales costs (costs of marketing, communication
and logistics) accounted for 60 percent of sales – compared with
approximately 90 % in the same period last year.
The company has made significant progress in increasing its
marketing efficiency: In the third calendar quarter 2000
approximately 3 million Deutschmarks were spent on marketing
whilst sales were reported at 8.4 million Deutschmarks
(equivalent to a ratio of marketing to sales of 36 percent). For
the first six months 2000 this ratio of marketing to sales was
still at 64 percent. Personnel costs have also declined relative
to sales. During the first nine months 2000 personnel
expenditure accounted for 18 % of sales, down from 22 % for the
same period in 1999.
Up to the end of the third calendar quarter, the company has
registered some 700 000 clients and achieved sales of up to
5 000 titles per day, compared with only 220 000 clients and up to
2 000 titles per day in the same period last year. The fourth
quarter traditionally sees sales at their highest, and
mediantis/buecher.de is anticipating further significant
increases in turnover up to total sales of approximately
40 million Deutschmarks for the overall financial year. This figure
is below the meanwhile target total turnover back in March 2000
(45 million Deutschmarks). However it reflects the expectations
indicated in the annual report 1999.
With cash flow at over 45 million Deutschmarks (as at 30
September 2000) mediantis/buecher.de has ample funds at its
disposal, far in excess of the planned break even point.
