Finnair recognised for leadership in climate change transparency
Finnair Oyj 08.10.2013 13:48 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finnair has achieved a position of leadership in the quality of climate change data it has submitted to the global marketplace through the Carbon Disclosure Project, the world's only global environmental disclosure system. The achievement is announced in the CDP Nordic 260 Climate Change Report 2013, which tracks how the world's largest listed companies are acting in response to a changing climate. For the 2nd consecutive year, Finnair has achieved a position in CDP's Nordic 260 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). This annual index, compiled by First Carbon Solutions on behalf of CDP, highlights those companies listed on the Nordic stock exchanges that have displayed a strong approach to the disclosure of information regarding climate change. Finnair's score this year is 96, improving on its 2012 score of 92. Companies are scored out of 100 on the completeness and standard of their submissions, which are completed at the request of 722 investors representing $87 trillion in assets. High scores indicate the provision of robust climate data and a good understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company. Through various channels, including Bloomberg terminals, these scores are communicated to investors and other decision makers to assess corporate preparedness for changing market demands and emissions regulation. In 2012 Finnair was the first airline to be included in the CDLI and the highest scoring airline in the CDP globally. In 2013 Finnair is once again the highest scoring airline in the Nordic region; other regions' 2013 CDP reports are yet to be released. 'Inclusion in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index is an important recognition of our disclosure practices with respect to climate change and corporate responsibility, and a clear signal to the investor community and other stakeholders that Finnair is prepared to proactively meet a commercial and regulatory landscape rapidly changing as a result of climate change,' says Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo. 'Since this year's CDP survey asked Finnair to account for carbon emissions not only in its own operations but in its deeper supply chain as well, I am especially pleased that Finnair has been able to continue its leadership position in accurate reporting of emissions data. Companies cannot take meaningful action and track results without first having an accurate understanding of their real environmental impacts.' 'Companies that score highly enough to be included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index are responding to the call for greater corporate climate accountability,' comments Carbon Disclosure Project CEO Paul Simpson. 'They have demonstrated leading practice for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use and transparency of their climate change strategy.' The CDLI comprises the organizations that achieved a score within the top 10 per cent of the sample assessed. In 2013 the Nordic 260 CDLI comprises 27 companies. The minimum score has risen year-on-year as corporate understanding of the need for climate transparency has increased. It now stands at 91.
